Leading up to the graduation of our 2017 Fellows, we will be introducing you to members of the 2017 class. Let's chat with Wendy Hamilton.
I am a fundraiser for Girl Scouts and an active advocate for disability rights. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Coe College and a Master of Fine Arts in theatre management from Wayne State University (the one in Detroit, MI). I have no idea I'm short until I see a photo of myself. I have a really fat cat and twin sister greyhounds who perpetually make poor choices.
As a practical, hands-on learner, I was drawn to the curriculum of the NLC. I knew that there was an individual capstone project, which appealed to me as a "doer." I was also fascinated by the idea of a progressive leadership program in a traditionally conservative area, particularly after the 2016 Presidential Election. I don't adopt a "gloom and doom" perspective, and NLC has made me feel like I'm part of a collective movement to give Omaha a strong progressive voice.
I have learned so much over the past few months, not just from the curriculum but from my classmates. I have made connections with some of Omaha's best and brightest and know that I'll continue learning from them for many years to come.
I love Omaha because of the opportunities it has provided to me. Time and again, I've felt nurtured by this town and its people. We aren't perfect, but we are the only city who can do Omaha they way we do.
Support Wendy and all of NLC by attending "Why We Love Omaha: An NLC Fundraiser" on June 8. Buy tickets today at http://omaha.newleaderscouncil.org/2017_fellows_event.
