Meet the 2018 Fellows: Scott Hahn

Leading up to our Progressing the Good Life event on June 8, we will be introducing the 2018 fellows. Today, we meet Scott Hahn.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a local kid - born, raised, and educated all in Omaha. I grew up in a single parent household with my mother who always amazed me with her passion and satisfaction from the profession that she chose - teaching elementary school students. Over the course of my life so far, including practicing law for the past 11 year, I've discovered that passion and satisfaction - more than money, fame - are the most important ingredients to being a happy person. I like to consider myself a 'happy warrior' in whatever I'm doing. No matter how difficult or stressful life may get, it is the passion and satisfaction I get from my profession, faith, family and friends that will never fail to pull me through.

Why New Leaders Council (NLC)?

I attended a recruiting event with 2017 fellow Tracy Hightower-Henne and others from our firm last fall. While doing so, I met a lot of previous and prospective fellows who all shared a passion for speaking their progressive values. I felt like my voice and contributions would be valued by this group. So far, it has!

What have you gained through your experience at NLC?

Besides meeting people I hope to remain in contact with for years to come, I've been able to work on and develop some interpersonal skills that I will need to continue moving forward. For example, I now have practiced how to engage in a fair and intelligent debate about my politics and values with others who don't share my point of view. And, I've developed a new appreciation for the experiences that other fellows have had the courage to share and strength to overcome during our first institute. I hope to continue opening my mind to new possibilities in everyday challenges, which I really started doing on a whole new level through NLC.

Briefly describe your capstone project.

The Progressive Lawyers of Nebraska, or "PLN" is a grassroots organization of fellow attorneys and other members of the local and state Bar associations committed to helping organize fellow colleagues to volunteer on upcoming local, state and federal campaigns. As attorneys and other law practitioners, I believe we have a heightened civic duty to engage in the political process, whether it be knocking on doors, phone banking, poll watching, policy research, or simply giving out yard signs to our neighbors. Now, more than ever in our country, it is so vital that as progressives we have an "all hands on deck" approach to the upcoming midterm elections and beyond. PLN is committed to bringing fellow colleagues and others "on deck" during this pivotal time in our nation's history.
