Meet the 2018 Fellows: Brittany Strong

Leading up to our Progressing the Good Life event on June 8, we will be introducing the 2018 fellows. Today, we meet Brittany Strong.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada and moved to the Omaha metro area about five and a half years ago. I currently work at Omaha Public Schools where I have the privilege of working with Native American high school students in the capacity of a mentor, advocate and teacher. When I am not busy with work, I love working out, spending time with my husband and puppies and traveling.

Why New Leaders Council (NLC)?

New Leader's Council is an amazing opportunity to meet new people, learn about things happening in your community that you may have not known about as well as open the door to opportunities. NLC also allows you to evaluate yourself and figure out where you want to see yourself and what impact you want to make. The sky is the limit and NLC just helps you get ready to launch.

What have you gained through your experience at NLC?

Through New Leader's Council I have met so many amazing individuals who I otherwise would not have met. I have been able to learn much more about some of the amazing things happening in the Omaha metro area. I have also been able to share with others about the work I do, which is always fun as many people do not know that a program like the one I work for exists. All of the amazing skills I have learned through NLC will help me not only in my current work but in future work I take on. Whether that be in my current position or other positions. Having a connection with so many organizations has also helped me bring opportunities to my students .

What's one fun fact or something people are surprised to learn about you?

I've walked on the Great Wall of China!

Briefly describe your capstone project.

My capstone profit focuses on helping a local nonprofit Native American youth advocacy program create a camp that focuses on the four tribes of Nebraska. The main focus will be the living and ceremony structures that each tribe utilized. These structures will also have standard based curriculum so that school districts across Nebraska can utilize the camp for hands on experiences for students.

Support Brittany and all of NLC by attending "Progressing the Good Life" on June 8. Buy tickets today at http://omaha.newleaderscouncil.org/thegoodlife
