Leading up to our Progressing the Good Life event on June 8, we will be introducing the 2018 fellows. Today, we meet Alex Garrison.
I am a technical writer and a voter-registration volunteer interested in the convergence of civics and technology.
Through friends, I heard great things about NLC — how helpful the training was, how beneficial the network was, and more. I was looking to learn more about being an effective volunteer-advocate and to get to know more emerging progressive leaders. I knew NLC would provide both of the opportunities and I've been blown away by just how high-quality the program has been. It's been an honor to be involved and I hope to help support others in benefiting from NLC.
One of the greatest aspects of the NLC experience has been the training and the approach to providing skills to learn and grow. The approach to "life entrepreneurship" has caused me to, in a short time, deeply examine and feel more confident in my personal, professional and volunteer goals.
I am excited to work on advancing smart technology policy through grassroots advocacy. The regulation of science, technology and data privacy is an issue of extreme importance that will only increase in impact in our daily lives. But there is little work being done to examine what that means, or to engage constituents in the lawmaking process, especially at the state and local levels. With my capstone project, I hope to begin working in my community to research how technology policy decisions will affect us — from promoting policies that protect citizen data to encouraging strong tech-based employment here in Nebraska.
Support Alex and all of NLC by attending "Progressing the Good Life" on June 8. Buy tickets today at http://omaha.newleaderscouncil.org/thegoodlife.
