Leading up to our Progressing the Good Life event on June 8, we will be introducing the 2018 fellows. Today, we meet Aaron Lockee.
I grew up in Omaha with a big family. Growing up with four brothers and a sister meant competition of any kind was a big part of my childhood. This competition ranged from football or baseball in the circle, to board games and video games.
I love to travel and meet people from different cultures, especially if I can speak to them in their language.
One of my mentors recommended I look into New Leader's Council after I told her I wanted to be more involved in the community. NLC has given me the space to think about how I want to make an impact in the community, but also help me get to know people who have already done similar things. One of the things I worried about was transferring the knowledge I gained through this experience to another place. Unfortunately my wife and I will have to move eventually, but the network of NLC is something that will be there wherever we end up.
I had a speech impediment until I was 10 years old. (Mario and Luigi were "Bop Bop 1" and "Bop Bop 2" because I couldn't say their actual names). I had a lot of help from my family, as well as OPS, before I even realized how lucky I was to receive that support. No one can tell I used to struggle with words (a huge shout out to my speech pathologist, Bonnie!)
My capstone project is a bit of introspection and reflection. I'll be moving within the next 2 years, and I want to make sure I hit the ground running in the next location. I'm trying to explore if the best way to do that would be through political campaigns and advocacy, or if returning to school and getting a PhD is the best route. In the next year, I'm looking forward to volunteering for different candidates, ballot initiatives, and talking with people about issues in the community.
