New Leaders Council

Meet our fellows: Julia Tse

Leading up to the graduation of our 2017 Fellows, we will be introducing you to members of the 2017 class. We start with Julia Tse.

Tell us a little about yourself.IMG_4813.jpg
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and have called Omaha home since 2013. Currently, I work for a small nonprofit doing things that I love-- picking apart data, reading lots of research, and figuring out how to make Nebraska a better place for all of our kids. My favorite hobbies are anthropomorphizing my 1-year-old Rottweiler and powerlifting.

What attracted you to the New Leaders Council?
My parents are both first-generation immigrants, and growing up in a place like Hawaii, I've reflected a lot on the American dream and why it seems increasingly out of reach for many, especially children of color. I jumped at the opportunity to join the New Leaders Council as an Omaha newcomer because I wanted to be able to develop my vision with the necessary skill sets and people who could help me along the way.

What have you gotten out of the NLC fellowship?
We've learned a lot in the Institute in the way of leadership, fundraising, and entrepreneurship, but I think the most valuable part of NLC is making meaningful connections with the other fellows. Our group is so diverse by almost every measure-- getting to learn from and grow with each other is an amazing experience.

Why do you love Omaha?
The food, and not just because I love to eat! In any city or town, food is a great way to get to know the local culture and history. Between the old Omaha favorites and the newer restaurants that are trying exciting things, there is plenty to choose from. I think the diversity of food options says a lot about Omaha and its people.
